Could the Poles Flip?

If you’ve been following recent science news, you may have noticed several articles about the movement of Earth’s magnetic poles. Could it happen? Is it possible magnetic north and south could switch places? Indeed, it has happened hundreds of times during our planet’s history, and each time, the effects have been catastrophic. A stable magnetic field is necessary for our survival. Does this make you think differently about the world?

“When North Becomes South” is fiction with a hint of realism. I wrote it to encourage people to recognize how much we depend on technology. Our infrastructure is fragile and it won’t take much to disrupt it. It’s important for us to face that and recognize we don’t have all the answers. In fact, it’s time to realize we may not be asking the right questions.

Do we have to change our behavior? Most scientists agree this should no longer be a question. We need to focus on how we should change and when. Actually, with climate change and events like a global pandemic, “when” is not a question anymore either. “How” is the only thing we can control.

Dark and scary? Yes. Does that mean doomsday? Not necessarily, though it’s worth considering how we would function in a changing world without all the comforts and conveniences we currently enjoy.

I’m not saying we should all become survivalists and hoarders. That probably wouldn’t work, anyway. (If you’re wondering why… read the book). What we need to do is think deeply about what is important, and how every action we take today may impact the trajectory of our planet. The question we might want to ask is: What do we need to do to keep our planet healthy and allow humankind to flourish into the future? Because, if we don’t address this, “Mother Earth” may one day decide to kick us all out of the house.
